WELCOME TO THOUGHT PARTNERING

As artists, organizers, and culture workers, we have a lot going on. Our work is wonderful, yet it’s also unwieldy, not the easiest to talk about, and sometimes strangely lonely. Let’s get together - I’ll be your thought partner. Email hello@smushgallery.com to book your session.

I can’t stress enough how much help she provided and the peace of mind I gained after sitting down with her and going over my application.

What Do You Want (or Need)?

Coaching on organization, goal setting, time management, communication, and/or personal accountability.

Feedback on creative work, messaging (emails, websites, social media), and/or professional materials (resumes, cover letters, and artist statements).

Facilitation of partner/group work, like defining/refining systems and working relationships, developing creative partnerships, improving interpersonal feedback protocols, and/or coaching collective creative work.

Thought partnering on just about anything else.

Who You’ll Talk To

Hi! I’m Katelyn Halpern, owner & artistic director of SMUSH Gallery and a working artist here in Jersey City. I love thought-partnering. Working on problems. Consulting. Discussing. Whatever you want to call it — I want to talk about what you want to talk about in the way you want to talk about it. Are you looking for advice or a sounding board? Do you want to think aloud, get help making a plan, or hear an outside evaluation? I’m ready for you.

You can expect me to be a keen questioner who shares insight and resources freely. My skills, strategies, and resources come from a collection of sensitive and thoughtful professional settings, most notably teaching grades K-12, founding SMUSH, and working in dance. I’m especially good at helping people write about themselves, organize complex systems and projects, and set clear goals and boundaries.

Rates

Base: $45/hour, $320/day
Solidarity: $25/hour, $175/day
Pay-It-Forward: $65/hour, $425/day

  • We operate on a sliding scale. Please consult “What Rate Should I Pay?” for guidance.

  • One hour minimum per session.

  • Prep time is counted separately and rounded to the half hour.

What Rate Should I Pay?

Base Rate - For those who are regularly able to meet their basic needs and have some expendable income. This rate fairly compensates the practitioner providing the service.

Solidarity Rate - For those who may stress about meeting basic needs and have limited expendable income. This rate is offered in solidarity with artists and organizers and is bridged by the Pay-It-Forward Rate.

Pay-It-Forward Rate - For those who are comfortably meeting their basic needs and who enjoy a substantial expendable income. This rate fairly compensates the practitioner and helps bridge the gap between the Solidarity Rate and the Base Rate.

These rates are adapted from AORTA and Essence of Embodiment Festival’s sliding scale pages; Essence of Embodiment adapted from The Green Bottle Sliding Scale by Califia Collective.
