WORKSHOPS ENROLLING NOW

Sewing Machines, Supplies & Buying Fabric

Supplies for the classes:

SMUSH has a number of sewing machines, so if you don’t have one at home you are welcome to use one of ours. These supplies are included in EVERY course: thread, zippers, buttons, notions, scissors, needles, and pins. Fabric is required for the Blazers, Jumpsuit, and Pants class; see recommendations below. (No fabric is required for the Intermediate Skills or Fashion Reimagined workshops.)

Fabric recommendations:

Blazer Course

  • For the jacket body (2.5-3.75 yards, depending on size): medium to heavyweight suitings or lightweight coatings such as wool melton, wool flannel, crepe and tweed. Velvet, medium-heavy weight cotton, seersucker and linen may also be used. Note: tightly woven, smooth surfaced suitings like wool gabardine are not recommended.

  • For the lining (2-3 yards, depending on size): rayon bemberg, charmeuse, crepe de chine, silky cottons like voile, poly/silk blends.

Jumpsuit Course (3.75-4.5 yards, depending on size)

  • For a structured look, use sturdy woven fabrics like denim, twill, canvas and mid to heavyweight linen and cotton. For a softer effect, choose mid-weight fabrics with drape, such as tencel twill, cupro or silk noil.

Beginner Pants Course (2.5-3 yards, depending on size)

  • You can get either woven (non-stretch) or knits (stretch) for these pants. Wovens are easier to sew but take more time to neaten the edges. Knits can be harder to sew, but don’t require neatening of edges. Woven: cotton, linen, rayon. Knits: jersey, tencel, bamboo, poly blends.

Where to get fabric?

  • We recommend taking a trip to FABSCRAP in Brooklyn where all the fabric is upcycled!

  • Or you could head to midtown Manhattan in the garment district towards Mood and the dozen+ fabric stores in that vicinity.

  • Shopping online is great too (SMUSH sewing students have enjoyed this shop), you just miss out on getting a feel of the fabric.

  • If you’re considering something but aren’t sure if it’s a good choice, drop Meagan a line: meaganawoods@gmail.com. We recommend that you buy the max range of yards so you have ample to work with; if you want to gauge a more precise yardage for your size, email Meagan for a sizing chart.
